What If You Give It A Chance?

What, you ask? Well, pretty much anything. This is for those of us who tend to turn things down to protect ourselves, to shut people and opportunities and unfamiliarity out. Those of us so stuck in our way of doing, our way of living, that we fear allowing anything else.

The reality is that we stand very little chance of evolving if we keep doing this. How can we? We aren’t allowing anything fresh into our world. Not everything will be for us – but we might never know if we just shut it down without any consideration at all.

I lived in California for nearly 16 years and never once considering surfing. I had absolutely no interest. Then I moved to Costa Rica for a season and I figured, why not? I live at the beach. The water is warm. What harm would there be in taking one lesson? After two hours, I was hooked. I ended up taking lessons every week for the next three months. I’m terrified of the ocean. I’m not a strong swimmer. I’d never done anything like it before. And yet… you just never know. I could’ve hated it. I could’ve validated all the beliefs I held around it. But in this case, I proved myself wrong.

We usually don’t want to give something a chance because we are afraid we will waste our time or get hurt (emotionally or maybe even physically, in the case of something like surfing!). We end up costing ourselves more in the end if we don’t, though. We cost ourselves the possibility of discovering something better than we ever imagined. We cost ourselves the opportunity to grow into a finer version of ourselves. We cost ourselves the chance to learn something about ourselves that we never knew.

So what’s it going to be? Are you going to keep hiding, or give something a chance? Try it out! I promise it’s not that bad. The more you do it, the easier it gets – and the rewards are worth it. You got this. Sending you love.
